Cream Cheese Apple Tart
I'm way late with my apple recipe for Johnny Appleseed Day, but here is the recipe any ways.
The Recipe:
Cream Cheese Apple Tart
Serves: 1 9" round tart pan
Ingredients for Crust:
1 1/4 cups flour
1/3 cup suagr
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, chilled
1 eggs
1 Tbsp milk
Ingredients for Filling:
1 8-oz. package cream cheese, softened
1/2 sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Ingredients for Topping:
2 large apples peeled, cored & thinly sliced
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
To start preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Butter or grease a 10" or 9" tart pan (you can use a pie pan if you don't have a tart dish). In a bowl or a food processor combine all your dry ingredients for your crust. Pulse (w/food processor) or mix ingredients. Then add in your chilled butter until the mixture starts to form a ball. Then pat dough into the tart dish. See photo for examples.
With mixer or a food processor, blend cream cheese and sugar. Once combined add in your egg yolks and vanilla and mix until smooth. I just mixed all ingredients together at once. Then spread your cream cheese mixture over your dough.
Start layering your apples very close together over the cream cheese. I cut my apples slices really thin and then layered them with a bit of space where I only used one apple. Don't do this... the tart doesn't come out as apple-y, moist or tasty. In a bowl combine all of your 'topping' ingredients. Then sprinkle over the apples.
Bake tart for 30 minutes and then reduce your oven temp to 300 degrees F and continue baking for 10 minutes until golden brown!
Note About Recipe: this recipe was orginally a breakfast tart, I felt with all the sugar it was more of a dessert. If you differ in your opinion and/or make it more fancy and dessert like I'd serve if with a small scope of vanilla bean ice cream or drizzle carmel sauce over it... or both ice cream and carmel!
